Hello my fiber witches! I am thrilled to share with you my newest free crochet pattern, the Selenic Tarot Pouch. The Selenic Tarot Pouch features a a pocket to store your deck, and the flap of the pouch opens into a long mat, perfect to perform readings.

The tarot deck shown in the photos is the Tarot of the Divine deck, that is inspired by folklore and fairytales from around the globe. It’s a beautiful deck that includes a guidebook. This is my first tarot deck and I have loved learning to read with it. You can find this product available on Amazon by clicking this link here.

Supplies Needed for the Selenic Tarot Pouch Crochet Pattern

  • 6.5 mm crochet hook
  • scissors and yarn needle
  • Two skeins of Lion Brand Rewind Tape – one skein for your main color and one skein for your accent color (used for the crescent moon and border). You could also use a different bulky weight yarn for this project, but I think the color and texture of LB’s Rewind Tape make it special and unique.

Terminology and Abbreviations:

  • AC – accent color
  • ch(s) – chain(s)
  • FO – fasten off
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • MC – main color
  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st – stitches

“2 HDC vs. HDC 2”

This pattern does have some easy increases and you will often see “hdc” with a number either before or after “hdc.” In this pattern,

  • X hdc – X hdc into the same stitch
  • hdc X – hdc X into the next X stitches

where “X” is the number of stitches. The first couple of rows have more detailed instructions on this point to help guide you throughout the pattern.

Instructions

First, you will begin working at the mat portion of your piece, with gradual increases to create the tapered end of the mat.

With your main color, start with a slip knot and ch 4.

Row 1: Hdc into the second stitch from the hook. Hdc 2. ch 1. (st=3)

Row 2: 2 hdc into the first stitch. Hdc 1. 2 Hdc into the last stitch. ch 1. (st=5)

Row 3: 2hdc into first stitch. Hdc 3. 2 hdc into last stitch. ch 1. (st=7)

Row 4: 2 hdc. Hdc 5. 2 hdc. ch 1. (st=9)

Row 5: 2 hdc. Hdc 7. 2 hdc. ch 1. (st=11)

Row 6: 2 hdc. Hdc 9. 2 hdc. ch 1. (st=13)

Row 7: 2 hdc. Hdc 11. 2 hdc. ch 1. (st=15)

Row 8: 2 hdc. Hdc 13. 2 hdc. ch 1. (st=17)

Row 9: 2 hdc. Hdc 15. 2 hdc. ch 1. (st=19)

Row 10: 2 hdc. Hdc 17. 2 hdc. ch 1. (st=21)

Row 11-13: work 3 rows of hdc all the way across. Do not increase.

Here you can see the tapered portion of the mat and the 3 rows of half double crochet.

Now that you’ve created the end portion of the mat, we will work the crescent moon. When working with these two colors, I recommend carrying your non-working yarn as you work with your working yarn.

Row 14: MC hdc 8. AC hdc 5. MC hdc 8. ch 1.

Row 15: MC hdc 6. AC hdc 9. MC hdc 6. ch 1.

Row 16: MC hdc 5. AC hdc 3. MC hdc 5. AC hdc 3. MC hdc 5. ch 1.

Row 17: MC hdc 4. AC hdc 3. MC hdc 7. AC hdc 3. MC hdc 4. ch 1.

Row 18: MC hdc 4. AC hdc 2. MC hdc 9. AC hdc 2. MC hdc 4. ch 1.

Row 19: MC hdc 4. AC hdc 1. MC hdc 11. AC hdc. 1. MC hdc 4. ch 1.

This is what your mat should look like now that you’ve completed the crescent moon.

You have now completed the crescent moon and you can cut your accent yarn. You will now work in your main color to create the remaining length of the project, which will make up the remainder of the reading mat and the end of the piece that will be folded over to create the pouch.

Rows 20-60. hdc 21.

At the end of row 60, switch to your accent color and ch 1.

Row 61: sc 21 across.

Creating the Pocket and Border

Now you will fold the rectangular end of the mat onto itself to make the pocket. Count ~ 11 rows (or 5″) back from the end of your work and fold that end over. Work single crochets along the sides of the rectangle to create the first side of the pocket. Once you reach the end of the pocket, FO and cut your yarn.

This is how your work should look now that you’ve created the first end of your pocket.

Pick up a new strand of your accent yarn at the same side of the pocket and sc a border up the side until you get to the top of the triangular side of the mat. Ch 50 tightly to make one strap. FO.

This is what your pouch will look like with the first border and strap complete.

Pick up a new strand of accent yarn at the opposite corner of thr pocket. Sc the two sides of the rectangle to make the other side of the pocket. Continue single crocheting up the sides of the mat to create the border, until you reach the top of the triangular side. Ch 50 tightly to make the other strap. FO

Weave in your ends and you are done!

This is what your tarot pouch will look like when the mat portion is folded over the pocket.
